Bewitched

Narrated Aisha:

Once the Prophet was bewitched so that he began to imagine that he had done a thing which in fact he had not done. Sahih al-Bukhari 3175

Many Muslims are unaware of such damning accounts about their prophet. Those who do know these sordid stories will dismiss them or try not to dwell on them too much because it’s disturbing that their beloved prophet of Islam was bewitched.

Does God allow his prophets to be bewitched? God protected the true prophets. They could never succumb to spells.

“For there is no enchantment against Jacob, no divination against Israel; now it shall be said of Jacob and Israel, ‘What has God wrought!’” Numbers 23:23

If a prophet of God can become bewitched, how can he also speak for God? How can he reveal God’s words if satanic powers and spells also affected and influenced him?

How Was Muhammad Bewitched?

Muhammad accused a Jew, Labid b. al-A’sam, of casting a spell on him. According to the bewitched prophet, Labid accomplished this when he stole Muhammad’s comb with strands of his hair stuck in it. Following that, Muhammad had a spell cast on him, became bewitched, and had vivid hallucinations. He was convinced that it was because of Jewish voodoo.

What exactly did he hallucinate while under the spell? The hadith narrations reveal that Muhammad hallucinated he was having sex with his wives.

Narrated Aisha:

Magic was worked on Allah’s Messenger so that he used to think that he had sexual relations with his wives while he actually had not (Sufyan said: That is the hardest kind of magic as it has such an effect).

Sahih al-Bukhari 5765

It must be very distressing for Muslims to read about their noble prophet becoming mentally unsound and suffering deranged hallucinations of sex.

How did Aisha know that Muhammad’s delusions were about sex during his period of insanity? It is unlikely that Muhammad would have confided in her about such a personal and embarrassing experience. It is likely that Aisha herself must have witnessed actions Muhammad was simulating and manifesting while he was bewitched.

Thanks to Muhammad, the Islamic world is steeped in superstitions and myths. Remember, these are all directives from Muhammad, and they come from the most authentic Islamic sources. Don’t forget that Muslims are commanded to obey Allah’s messenger. (see Qur’an 4:80, 3:31)

Here are just three examples:

i. Muhammad said that if you have a bad dream, you should spit on your left so that the bad dream will not harm you. (Sahih al-Bukhari 6986)

ii. Muhammad said that if a fly falls into your drink, dip the whole fly into the drink before removing it. After that, you can go ahead and drink up. According to Muhammad, one of the wings has a disease, while the other has a cure and an antidote. (Sahih al-Bukhari 3320)

iii. Muhammad said that if you drink from a silver utensil, you fill your belly with hellfire. (Sahih al-Bukhari 5634)

There are a ton of weird and silly superstitions like these in Islamic sources. I have only mentioned a few above as examples from Al-Bukhari. Sahih Al-Bukhari is widely recognized and accepted as the most authentic collection of sunnah in the Muslim world. Its importance to Muslims is second only to the Qur’an.

Aisha said "The Prophet of God liked three things of this world: Perfume, women, and food; he had the [first] two, but missed food."
